Role/Position Definition: The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for management of the nursing service department and for the direction and supervision of all nursing service functions and activities. Plans, develops and directs the implementation of nursing practice policy and service development to be in compliance with standards of Nursing Practices, CMS & State regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities     

  • Develops and implement a nursing service policy procedure book to include the philosophy and objectives of the Nursing Dept., as well as the standards of nursing to guide and support the provision of services.
  • Provides mechanisms and support to the nursing staff to enable full participation in the interdisciplinary process.
  • Provides orientation to the department and professional education to the nursing staff maintaining and improving practice standards.
  • Develops programs to meet the needs of the persons served.                          
  • Develops, maintains and supervises the development and maintenance of appropriate monitors of the quality of nursing care.                                                                                
  • Coordinates staff development key nursing educator programs, including nursing staff orientation.
  • Acts as House Supervisor as assigned.    
  • Assures supply/equipment needs for the nursing department.                         
  • Holds appropriate department meetings to ensure information is disseminated and maintain minutes of such.
  • Prepares department payroll.
  • Is responsible for the organization and structuring of the nursing department.                              
  • Provides for and maintains the lines of responsibility and communication within the department.
  • Directs, coordinates and intervenes to provide fair personnel management.  
  • Assures appropriate performance assessments are completed.           
  • Responsible for the hiring, termination, transfers and salary adjustments of all nursing personnel.                               
  • Directs the nursing department to meet State, Federal and accrediting agency rules, regulations and standards.
  • Prepares the operational and capital budget for the Nursing Department including staff; supply; administrative; educational needs in collaboration with the nursing staff, hospital and corporation administration.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education/Experience

  • RN Degree Nursing required.
  • Associate degree required. BSN preferred.
  • 3+ years of nursing management experience required.

 License/Certification

  • Current unrestricted RN license from the State of Michigan.
