Standard Hours Per Week: 24 hours/week

 

Role/Position Definition: Responsible for supporting the surgical patient flow by assisting the surgery staff with delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse or surgical technologist. Scope of responsibility includes but is not limited to patient safety and satisfaction; assuring resources are readily available for each case; assisting with next case needs; stocking ORs, PACU, core supply, linen and other carts; assisting with patient care; cleaning and preparing OR and PACU suite; and transporting of patients for perioperative services. Participates in process improvement, team building and respects hospital policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Address patients, visitors, families, and co-workers in a pleasant and respectful manner: display courtesy at all times.

Display an unhurried and caring manner with visitors, families, and co-workers when performing duties.

Maintain confidentiality of all patient-hospital or physician related information. Refrain from gossip and speak in low tones in all appropriate areas.

Demonstrate a pleasing disposition and sensitivity to visitors', families, and co-workers' needs.

Perform related assignments as requested in order to promote positive visitor, family, and co-worker relations.

Obtain on duty report from Charge Nurse at beginning of shift.

Respond quickly and appropriately to inquiries and requests.

Monitor the OR board for scheduling changes.

Clean and prepare ORs between surgical procedures.

Clean and prepare PACU rooms between patients.

Monitor supply inventory, order and restock central areas and outlying storage locations as volume dictates:

Specialty carts

Storage rooms

 OR Rooms

 PACU Rooms

Warmers

Scrub sinks

Assist with direct patient care as requested including, but not limited to lifting and/or positioning of patients.

Transport patients and obtain patient beds as requested.

Work effectively with other departments' staff to assure OR is clean, safe, and ready for patient care.

Observe Standard Precautions (gloves, gown, mask, eye protection) when handling any hazardous/ bio material.

Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Clean and return equipment and lead aprons to appropriate location(s).

Clean OR shelves and space as requested.

Monitor and manage cleanliness of lounges and work areas.

Communicate end of shift report to Charge Nurse prior to departure.

Perform other duties as assigned appropriate to responsibilities.

 

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications/Position Requirements:

 Education/Experience

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Six to twelve months of related work or clinical experience in a hospital or patient care setting.
  3. Completion of Anatomy and Physiology preferred.

 Licensure/Certification

  1. Current Basic Life Support Certification for Healthcare Providers, from the American Heart Association required.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of aseptic technique, infection control requirements, and basic knowledge of surgical procedures, terminology, equipment, and instrumentation.
  2. Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work effectively with nursing and medical staff in stressful situations.
  3. Must possess customer service skills and be able to demonstrate at all times.
  4. Requires frequent judgment and response; occasionally in response to disasters or emergencies, actual events or drills.
  5. Requires effective listening and language skills adequate for high-level written and interpersonal communication.
  6. Ability to prioritize multiple demands and multi-task.
  7. Ability to move quickly in response to physician and patient needs.
  8. Ability to recognize and process confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
