Role/Position Definition:

The Pre-admission Testing (PAT) nurse is responsible for obtaining all preoperative assessments and testing for all Surgery Center Patients. The assessment is documented and placed in the patient’s medical record. After the completion of the assessment, the PAT nurse, using pre-established criteria, will determine the patient’s ASA classification and/or will work with the Anesthesiologist to determine ASA classification. The PAT nurse will be responsible for identifying if specialty or internal medicine consults are required and all problem resolution as identified in the Preadmission Testing policy and protocols. The PAT nurse will solve challenges and obstacles as identified within the PAT program flow chart. The PAT nurse is also responsible for assisting the Internal Medicine physician with preoperative history and physicals and deliver preoperative education based on diagnosis and procedure. The PAT nurse will act as a nurse navigator for all Total Joint patients.

  • Objectively evaluates suggestions, grievances, and processes to identify opportunities to improve performance and quality of care.

  • Reports observed or suspected violations, hazards, and noncompliance according to Facility policy.
  • Observes safety measures in performance of job duties and responsibilities; enforces compliance with safety and security policies and procedures.
  • Responds to emergency situations with competences and composure.
  • Responsible using the Preadmission Assessment form to assess preoperative patients for the Preadmission Testing Program.
  • Identifies potential or actual obstacles that would prevent an accurate assessment.

  • Problem solves challenges and obstacles as identified within the Preadmission Testing Program flow chart.
  • Assist the Preadmission Testing Physician with the patient’s history and physical.
  • Perform EKG and/or lab work as ordered.
  • Conduct preoperative patient education.
  • Communicates effectively and regularly with the Manager of Perioperative Services, Anesthesiologist, and the Preadmission Testing Physician.
  • Contacts the Director of Risk Prevention when risk and safety issues arise.
  • Contacts the Infection Control Officer when infection control issues arise.
  • Adhere to the principles of confidentiality.
  • Identify customer needs, and respond by fostering communications and coordination among individuals and departments.
  • Maintain knowledge of current laws, regulations, and external regulatory requirements as they pertain to the Preadmission Testing Program.
  • Uses the Nursing Process when assessing patients and problem solving.
  • Follow departmental and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Able to analyze, evaluate, and develop corrective actions as indicated.
  • Possess knowledge of interventions for encountered problems and ability to see the “Big Picture”.
  • Creative ability for problem solving while utilizing adult learning principles.
  • Able to be self directed and function as a team member.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Qualifications/Position Requirements:

A. Education/Experience

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing required.
  • 5+ years working on a Medical Surgical Unit.
  • 10+ years working in a hospital environment in a clinical setting.

B. Licensure/Certification

  • Current unrestricted State of Michigan Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse licensure required.
  • Current BLS required.

C. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, negotiation skills, and problem solving abilities.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and possess critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge to be self directed.
